Microsoft Points to be gone by the end of 2012?

News - Microsoft could be moving over to regional currency for their download services

Microsoft could be set to phase out their Microsoft Points virtual currency in favour of using real world currency on all their online platforms.

Xbox Live Marketplace, Zune Marketplace and Windows Phone all use a mixture of Microsoft Points and real world currency for purchases but Microsoft is apparently briefing developers that for a phase out of their virtual currency in favour of real money.

The move would probably see Microsoft switch from a universal pricing strategy on Xbox Live to a regional model similar to Steam, PSN and the Apple App Store.

What is entirely unclear is how or even if they will be converting unspent Microsoft Points to real currency or not. Currently 400 MS Points corresponds to 3.50 GBP or 5 USD.
