Sony's next generation of hardware is in development
News - Increased R and D spending gives it away
An investor question during Sony's end of year financial report has outed the existence of a successor to the PlayStation 3.
Sony CFO Masaru Kato was asked to explain why Sony has increased spending on their research and development department and confirmed that they were indeed developing their next generation of console hardware.
Kato added: "For the home equipment the PS3 still has a product life, but this is a platform business, so for the future platform - when we'll be introducing what product I cannot discuss that - but our development work is already under way, so the costs are incurred there."
This revelation from Sony is still in line with the notion that the PS3 still has four or five years left on its lifespan with analysts predicting that their next machine will not arrive until around 2013 at the earliest.
