Rockstar sued over 'stolen' GTA concept

Glasgow computer consultant Mark Gallagher has launched a new legal action against Rockstar (formerly DMA Design), alleging that the developer stole his design ideas in creating the Grand Theft Auto series - which went on to sell millions globally.

Gallagher seeks £1.5 million in damages from Rockstar North, and the action will take place at the Court of Session, Edinburgh. Naturally, the developer contests Gallagher's claim and will defend themselves vigorously.

Gallagher alleges that his game Crime Inc., which he developed between 1991-93 bares more than a passing resemblance to GTA; what's more - he used a demo of the title which involves fighting between rival street gangs at an interview for a post at then- DMA Design. Whilst he did not get the position, his demo disc was retained by DMA.

Although Rockstar is effectively the same firm as DMA in all but name, the Scottish developer denies all knowledge of the interview and the game in question.
