PS3 could emulate PS2 games using software
News - Sony prepare new Cell update?
Word in today has it that Sony have patented a new system that will allow the firm to emulate the PS2 console's Emotion Engine using the PS3's Cell processor.
To you and me this could mean the return of complete backwards compatibility, allowing all PS3 systems to play PS2 titles without the need for fancy hardware changes.
If Sony can pull it off this move it would be a major PR boost, while rumour has it that the console will get a price cut later this year, ahead of a possible PS3 Slimline SKU launch - and some major firmware enhancements in general.
More PS3 chit-chat as we get it. Thanks VG247.
