C64 emulator denied iPhone release

News - Apple reject app

Manomio's reportedly impressive Commodore C64 emulator for the iPhone has been denied release on Apple's App Store, but this isn't because of the complexity of the licensing laws involved. Rather, the emulator breaks Apple's own rules.

According to word in today from Kotaku, "an Application may not itself install or launch other executable code by any means."

Given that the app would have been all about launching additional games - ROMs - this rule makes the whole emulator somewhat pointless.

Whether Manomio can do anything about this rejection remains to be seen, but reports do suggest that other big name apps already violate these rules to an extent.

Given that the app includes a certain amount of official Commodore licensing already, it seems likely the developers will continue in their efforts to get this released.
