PS3 sales leap over last year

News - Summer numbers soar

PS3 sales are up in 2008 over 2007, this summer seeing Sony's machine shifting twice as many systems as during the same period last year.

Between April and June this year, Sony sold 1.56 million PS3s worldwide; last year's number was 700,000. Software sales are also on the march, up from over 18 million during the same period, to over 22.8 million.

Good news for the firm's lounge-box, then, but this success pales compared to the PSP, which sold 11.8 million units during the period in question. That's two million more than last year.

Sony are predicting PS3 sales of 10 million during the current financial year. This compares to a PSP prediction of 15 million.
